For this year’s National Farmworker Awareness Week, PJC Youth attended a Dolores screening in Smithfield, NC. Dolores Huerta is an important icon in the farmworker justice movement, yet often very little is known about her. This screening was an opportunity for PJC Youth and the community to learn about her struggles, challenges, and successes as she fought for farmworker rights.
The screening was hosted by UNC-TV Public Media NC and Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) on Sunday, March 25th. The screening was followed by a short presentation and discussion where farmworker youth were given the opportunity to share their own personal experiences and how the film resonates with them. Among the youth was PJC Estefany who shared what it was like for her working in the fields in Eastern NC.
We’d like to give SAF and UNC-TV a special thanks for creating this amazing opportunity and experience for youth. Through this activity youth were shown they have a voice too and it deserves to be heard! We are extremely proud of Estefany for showing resilience by sharing her personal story.
