2020 Recap! In case you missed it, we’ve been working!

January 13, 2021 by Yesenia Cuello

2020 was certainly an interesting year, to say the least. While the world retreated to their homes and self-quarantined; essential workers such as nurses, doctors, farmers, and especially farmworkers maintained the frontlines of sustaining our nation’s well being. As an organization that uplifts and supports the farmworker community, we were obligated to increase our efforts to support our farmworkers while they supported us.

In case you missed it…

– In January, NC FIELD participated in NC STATE’s MBA FoodCon. FoodCon is an annual conference that celebrates the food and agri-business community.

– In March we cancelled our inaugural GFAF Gala. However, in true 2020 fashion we quickly adapted and are gearing up for hosting our Inaugural GFAF Gala virtually in March 2021.

– In May we created – Check out our personal + professional development toolkit called Each One, Teach One.

– From July – November We partnered with Kinston Teens to increase the civic engagement in our areas. Are you registered to vote? Click here to register now because your vote matters now more than ever.

– Right before school started in August –  we hosted a media literacy crash course that focused on finding reputable health information online during a pandemic. You can catch the recap of the presentation on our blog.

– In September we officially launched our Farmworker Pandemic Relief Fund. This fund is available to eligible applicants for costs related to emergency protective measures conducted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Find the application here in English + Español. If you want to make a contribution to this fund, you can make a donation now!
– Starting in November, NC FIELD began hosting weekly wellness clinics in Lenior, Wayne, and Greene counties. A few of the clinics we partnered with Access East, the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry, the Kinsotn Community Health Center, Duplin Migrant Education Program, and NC STATE Cooperative Extension to offer additional support, food, and aid for clinic participants. We averaged about 50 participants per clinic!

– In December we maintained momentum with our wellness clinics and really increased our reach and impact by meeting farmworkers where they are. Not to mention we began planning our largest fundraising event for March 2021, the Give Food A Face Gala; which will be conducted virtually during Farmworker Awareness Week!

Not bad for a small organization with a huge footprint! We are proud of the work we’ve done in 2020. Considering the circumstances NC FIELD has continued to persevere and deliver. 2020 was a testament to our mission of championing and elevating the agricultural workforce. We can’t wait to share with you all of the great stuff slated for 2021! Stay tuned…
