Human Rights Watch: Teens of the Tobacco Fields: Child labor in United States tobacco farming

March 23, 2020 by Yesenia Cuello

TOn the cover of this report and throughout, a few of the visuals capture some of NC FIELD’s PJC Youth who are now alums!

The findings presented in this report build on previous research that Human Rights Watch conducted in 2013, documenting hazardous work by children on US tobacco farms. Human Rights Watch did not seek to monitor implementation of new industry policies or conduct a comprehensive evaluation of how conditions may have changed for child tobacco workers since 2013. Rather, for this report, Human Rights Watch aimed to investigate the effects of tobacco farming on a specific population—16 and 17-year-old children—excluded from protection due to gaps in tobacco industry policies and the US legal and regulatory framework.

PRESS RELEASE: ATTEND THE INAUGURAL GIVE FOOD A FACE GALA ON MARCH 27, 2020

February 6, 2020 by Yesenia Cuello

Official Press Release English

Official Press Release Espanol

The inaugural Give Food A Face Gala fundraiser is coming up on Friday, March 27, 2020, from 7-11 pm. This historic event will be held at the CSS Neuse Center, 100 N. Queen Street, Kinston, North Carolina.

Tickets are available for $40 until March 1.

This Gala will feature a silent and live auction featuring items from local North Carolina businesses and organizations. There will be a variety of delicious and authentic Latin food, including heavy Hors d’oeuvres from Kinston’s premier restaurant, Chef and The Farmer. The Give Food A Face Gala is going to be a special night of great music, culture, food, and philanthropy.

The “Give Food A Face” initiative focuses on raising public awareness about the injustices that support the industrial agricultural system by connecting consumers with the people that cultivate their foods. The gala is organized by and benefits NC FIELD, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization based in Kinston, North Carolina. NC FIELD works with migrant and seasonal farmworker youth and families utilizing grassroots organizing principles to inspire leadership, promote education, and facilitate economic and educational opportunities beyond the fields.

The Give Food A Face Gala is NC FIELD’s major fundraising event and the monies raised from donations, ticket sales, and auction profits, will be critical for the health of the Give Food A Face initiative. This particular fund will enable NC FIELD to create higher education scholarships and internship opportunities for farmworker youth.

NC FIELD’s mission is to forge relationships that fill service gaps in the farmworker community while increasing the awareness of the plight of the farmworker. NC FIELD participates in presentations at universities, schools, conferences, and forums to bring awareness to the labor injustices in North Carolina and promote equity for the farmworker community. A major component of NC FIELD’s Give Food A Face initiative is a documentary series amplifying the stories and testimonies of the agricultural community. Through this NC FIELD is able to connect consumers with the people that cultivate, pick, and pack their foods. The documentary series lives on the program’s website, GiveFoodAFace.org and is shared via social media and on NC FIELD’s blog.

In addition to the Give Food A Face initiative, this nonprofit offers a youth mentorship group called Poder Juvenil Campesino, a Farmworker Emergency Fund, and a Hurricane Relief Fund. See more information about the gala at GiveFoodAFace.org.

PJC Youth Cook Alongside a Professional Chef…

June 16, 2018 by Yesenia Bustos

GREENVILLE, NC – North Carolina Focused on Increasing Education, Leadership, and Dignity, NC FIELD, organized a culinary workshop for Poder Juvenil Campesino (PJC) farmworker youth at CPW’s Fine Foods & Spirits on Sunday, June 24, 2018.  PJC farmworker youth from various towns in eastern North Carolina, such as Kinston, Pink Hill, Snow Hill, and Beulaville participated in this workshop. In a safe and relaxed environment, farmworker youth learned about techniques and basic cooking methods used to prepare dishes by Head Chef Eric Beamon.

Alongside Chef Eric, PJC youth had a unique privileged to step inside a restaurant kitchen to prepare a dish. PJC youth were educated on proper food safety, basic pre-preparation techniques, and cooking methods. Chef Eric also voiced to PJC youth about career opportunities in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

NC FIELD believes that education is a window to get out of poverty. However, for many farmworker youths who live in rural areas, they often do not have role models or resources to support them to continue their education and to seek alternative careers outside the dangers of manual labor.

As youth sat around the table, enjoying their prepared dish, they learned about Chef Eric’s career journey.  PJC Youth were able to connect to the risks and challenges he’s overcome in order to pursue his passion for culinary. It was an amazing and educational opportunity for PJC youth to learn that through hard work, commitment, and passion one can achieve their goals. Chef Eric is currently the head chef at CPWs where he has worked at for a few years.

It was a scintillating workshop with lots of fun and learning. PJC youth seemed happy after attending the workshop and looking into planning another one! Such workshops for youth are a great way for youth to learn new skills and network with potential role models.
